Organisation Outline:
The Geological Society of London is the UK national society for geoscience. It is a learned and professional body, and a registered charity. It exists to promote
the geosciences and the professional interests of UK geoscientists. The society has over 9000 members and is the largest national geoscience society in Europe. There are several categories of membership each appropriate
to the various stages of a geoscientist’s career form student to retirement. The Society has 23 Specialist Groups and Joint Associations, catering for most aspects of modern Earth science, including Hydrology, Environment and Geochemistry
Research Groups. There are 13 Regional Groups in the UK and one in Hong Kong. These groups organise scientific, technical, professional and social events locally.
All specialist groups, regional groups and joint associations have their own pages, accessible from the main Society web site. The Hydrological Group is hosted by the University of Birningham: http://www.bham.ac.uk/GeolSoc_Hydro/ The forward calendar of events organised by the Groups and Associations are published in the Society’s magazine ’geoscientist’ and on the web site. The Society maintains an online Library Catalogue, although most publications prior to 1989 are not in the online catalogue but can be traced through the
Card Catalogue in the Library. The library is open five days a week. Library opening times, services, accessibility and contact details can be found on the web
site.
